I loved this set untill about 1000 Hours. Simply do a google search on panasonic black levels or check Cnet. My S1 is worse then an LCD. Pansonic claims this is a feature but after a coulpe more thosand hours I think my set will be fully washed out. I now leaving it on 24/7 wasting 500watts so I can show them the full extent and of thier problem and fight to get my warranty. This is pathetic. I will NEVER buy Panasonic again.

"Panasonic S1 50 inch plasma … my first HDTV" 2010-02-12
By M. K. (United States of America)
I have had this TV for a little over two months now. I won’t do a full review since so many others have done it justice. I will say that overall, I love it. It has rich colors and deep blacks. I was deciding between this 50 inch S1 and the 42 inch G10. I’m happy with my choice because you’ll always want a bigger size screen. I went from a Sony 32" CRT to this and I was a little overwhelmed by the size once we put it on the stand. Of course, after a month, you become used to the size … so get the biggest size you can afford that will fit your room. I’m telling you, it will appear to "shrink" in size after a month or so.

There have been a lot of complaining recently with Panasonic Plasmas losing their black levels after a certain period of time. I haven’t noticed it yet and hope it doesn’t happen or if it does, then I hope it will be so small of a raise that I wouldn’t even notice. Panasonic says it’s by design. Who knows who is telling the truth? They may or may not be searching for a solution, but so far … it’s staying as is. They have lost many future customers though, so they really should try to do something.

I still prefer Plasmas over LCDs. The blacks are so much better and the viewing angle doesn’t change the picture quality. No matter how many different LCDs I see, I can’t stand the black levels. Don’t judge a TV by store lighting. LCDs will always appear brighter in stores and thus … more appealing. Plasmas will appear darker in stores, which is why the average people stay away from them. These are the same people who spend $50 on an HDMI cable when a $10 cable will do the same thing. Trust me. The plasma screens (when calibrated properly) will blow you away. The reflection is not a problem at all. You get more reflection from the surrounding bezel than you do the screen. My LCD monitor has more reflection. My previous CRT TV had more reflection, so that problem seems resolved to me. Friends come over and they want to upgrade their LCDs to a plasma after seeing this TV. Of course, different people have different tastes, so you’ll have to do your own research.

This TV isn’t perfect. I don’t see it as a five star television, but it is definitely a nice one. Problems I have with it is the Image Retention. There is no Burn-in as far as I can tell (which is different than IR). Image Retention can last a whole day sometimes, but it’s barely noticeable. For example: I played "Batman: Arkham Asylum" all day one time. It was just a fun game that I couldn’t put down. Anyway, there is a health bar/semi circle that stays on screen and only goes away if you are at full health. Well, after I finished for the night … I could see that outline on the screen. It was very faint and only when the screen was otherwise completely dark, so it didn’t bother me … but it stayed there the next day. Again, I can’t stress enough that you actually have to look for it to be able to see it. Plus, it does go away. Older plasma will have the burn-in problem. I just wish the image retention would go away quicker because it is a scary thing to see after a few hours … and it makes me wary of playing games that have constant HUDs.

Another problem is that the sound is mediocre. It’s not terrible, but since they put the speakers behind the TV, the sound is kinda muffled. They did this for design looks, thinking that most people would use a receiver anyway. Well, I couldn’t use my receiver really until I got an optical cable. My receiver is eight years old, so it didn’t have HDMI cables. I would’ve preferred the speakers being in front for better sound.

The three HDMI inputs are okay, though I wish there were at least four. I plan on upgrading my receiver at some point so this might not be an issue. One thing I didn’t know before purchasing this TV was that you can NOT get 1080p signals using component cables. This makes no sense to me. I have one of the older Xbox 360s that does not have HDMI, so I’m stuck with component. It’s not horrible because most games are made for 720p, but Netflix is supposed to be 1080p. Since Panasonic doesn’t seem to want to upgrade their Viera-Cast Blu-Ray players with Netflix (saving that for 2010 models), I was thinking about using the 360, but I can’t get 1080p. I’m fine since I can use my computer via HDMI, but it would be nicer without having to put my computer on. You can get 720p and 1080i with component in case you are wondering.

The SD card slot is basically a joke. If you put in a card that has pictures that have a higher than 2 megapixel resolution, be prepared to wait to view a slideshow. Most cameras nowadays have at least 8 megapixels which makes viewing them painfully slow. If I have friends come over that want to show their pictures on the big TV, I won’t put it in the SD slot because it’s way too slow. I’ll put it in my Wii SD slot. That has a much better slideshow performance, plus … you can actually make a puzzle out of the pictures.

Overall, I do love the TV regardless of the minor quibbles. The black levels are great, but they aren’t as great as I’d like them. The greens do look a tad neon in some instances, but who knows if that is really the TVs fault or if it’s the issue with the source material because I don’t see it on every channel or Blu-Ray. I didn’t like the look of the Standard Definition channels compared to my CRT, but I think that’s the problem with the service. Standard Def DVDs look more than fine on this TV. The TV’s not perfect, but there’s isn’t much out there that is. I know this TV is getting harder to find. I paid under nine bills for it, so it was a good deal for me. If you’re thinking about waiting for the 2010 models, you may have to wait until November to get a great deal. If you are waiting for 3D, then I’d suggest you wait another two years at least while they get all the kinks out. The biggest concern is that rise in black levels after a certain amount of hours that people are complaining about on forums. Are they being too picky about it? I don’t know because I haven’t noticed it. But … it does make someone think twice about choosing Panasonic.

I have had this set for about 8 months so far and I am quite happy with it.
The only complaint I have is alot of green on the screen when you get to the lower resolution signals but that is to be expected.

"Excellent TV! Poor shipping by Amazon" 2010-01-13
By N. Parsons
Very brief review, the tv is excellent—a best buy if you will. That’s why I give it 5 stars.

This review is for Amazon’s shipping. I love Amazon and I purchase everything from them (literally), however I do not recommend them for high dollar, large items such as 50" plasma tv’s. Why? Shipping took over 2 months and customer service was very lacking, friendly but absolutely unhelpful–their polices offer very little to mititage their problems. Bascially they will sell items they don’t currently have enough of to meet demand (oversell) and so some people will get their tv as promised while others will have to wait awhile. I was going to host a BCS championship party. Had to send out apologies and cancel because Amazon fumbled big.
Could have paid an extra hunded bucks and had tv immediately from a black friday sale–I would recommend other, non-Amazon sellers on certain items because they don’t do anything for the customer when they make mistakes.

For my birthday this year my parents bought me a Nice TV for my dormitory area. I know I’m very lucky to have parents so special.
My roommate is also apotropaic have a roommate who has made a large HDTV display during our evenings to study or party, whatever the circumstances may be now.
The only problem I found was that I could not pay the monthly fee for cable channels in high definition.
My parents told me that if I bought the TV, I had to manage the cost of channels in high definition, so I prefer to do. Of course, I want high quality photos, why not?
I was looking for a project one night and slipped on some sites talking about antennas. I could not believe what I read, because it was as if I had found gold or something. He recalled that the principal.
The antennas provide signals so as not to use the cable provider to receive the signals. I thought it was great, but I do not really know where I would put an antenna in a dormitory area.
I started thinking about it and continued to read on-line. Finally, I found something that had happened in my room. There is a setting of high-definition image. Weird, I know.
You can post a photo frame, hanging on the wall and receives a signal for the channels of high quality. I bought and tried. It was not expensive at all so I do not have to worry about throwing away a piece of my bank.
I am glad that I decided to buy it, because I am so happy with her and wanted to let everyone know, especially those coming from other schools. We have no money, but we still need to have a nice TV to watch.
We work hard and need a stress release. Now, my roommate and I have many of the best channels available. We spend too much time in front of my television, but that’s OK.
Another thing I realized while doing my research, is that after February 17, 2009, I would not be able to watch my TV without the HD service from my cable Co., because all issuers are required to transmit these signals only.
Now I am ready for the move and can keep watch with no problems, now and in the future.

I mounted a 42 inch LG with side speakers so the TV width is 47.5 inches. This product was sturdy and took two people to mount the rack and lift the TV in place. They give you so many screws to attach the mounting brackets to the TV it probably fits most TV’s. Make sure your studs are 16 inches apart before ordering. This mount will not work with 24 inch studs

A lot of people have made a comment that the only drawback of this item is its heavy. Yes it is, I was a weightlifter for many years and I had trouble holding this thing on the wall at shoulder level.

All in all though, this is a solid and well assembled wall mount; greatly worth the price.

Chose this mount through the reviews. I understood the drawbacks stated in the reviews, heavy, requiring 2 people to hang, 16-on-center beams, etc. All of these are quite minor compared to the great quality and value of this product. I had this mounted (my wife helped me hold up to get the first bolt in) in about 25 minutes. Love the versatile movement on this mount with my 42" TV. I would definitely both this for a second TV.

This product was very well constructed. It’s a good solid strong metal and not "tinny".
Unfortunately with my standard depth cabinets I could not mount it under the cabinet because it would not fold up without hitting the back wall. This was the reason I bought it as I want to fold away the TV when not in use. I had to return the stand. If you have deep cabinets this should hold a 15-19" TV without any problem.

I used this bracket to mount a 19" LCD under my kitchen cabinet. The bracket is very high quality and quite sturdy. I would have given it five stars except for one quirk I still don’t understand. The clamp that attaches to the vertical post needs to be left a little loose or you can’t swivel the TV. However if the clamp is not tight, the TV tends to walk down the post as it is being swiveled. To fix this problem I added my own clamp collar underneath the clamp that attaches to the TV. Now the TV swivels without walking down the post. It was an easy fix but it seems the additional clamp should have been supplied with the kit.

It features Voice Enhancement Technology which clarifies television dialog like no other wireless headset. It also features Automatic Commercial Control which caps the volume of loud commercials . This system is not recommended for plasma or LCD screen televisions. Johnson (New Mexico)
TV Ears 10041 Original System (Black) For some one who doesn’t want to wake his wife at nightbecause you are watching tv, this will work. Its not the most wonderful sound system in the world, but it works ok. Would recomend it for some one who wants something like this but does not want to spend a lot of money.

“cheap construction” 2010-01-18
By swaybar (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
I have used these for about 3 years. On the first set, after 6 months or so the 2 screws that hold the head set together became loose and the container began to seperate. I tried tightening the screws but they would not budge and I didn’t want to force them. I returned this set and received another. I’ve had them almost 2 years and the same thing is happening. The screws are too small and cheap and won’t bite as the openings are also not deep enough. As for performance I was very satisfied but not if the headset requires replacement so often.

“Great idea, but cheaply made” 2009-12-15
By Richard D. Thomson
I like that this unit hangs from the ears rather than covering them like most headsets. The plastic is fairly delicate and tends to break easily with repeated, daily use. Overpriced for what you get, too. My main complaint is that it picks up the signal from my iPhone(phone updates frequently with what sounds like morse code). And, it also picks up static from my energy-saving light bulbs, which is very annoying. Another issue is that the recharging base is badly designed. For the first six months of use, there was no problem. However, after that, when the ear unit was placed on the recharge base, the indicator light would not light up, so I had to resort to some quick fixes, which are too difficult to explain. TV Ears are a great idea, but poorly execution.

“Very poor design and construction” 2009-02-25
By D. Dohler
A good idea ruined by poor design and poorer quality. Maybe I got a bad one, but if so their quality control is horrible. First, I had to jiggle it just to get it to charge. Not nearly as easy as the video suggests. The small pins on the base unit do not make a solid contact with the headphones. Even if they work initially they most likely will fail once some tarnish sets in. The contacts are not gold plated, so they will tarnish.

The range was horrible. If I got further back than about 6′, all I got was static. And even at 6′ it was extremely directional. If you turned your body the slightest, the sound completely dropped out. Someone walking in front of the set would kill the sound.

I mistrust companies which throw out gratuitous marketing terms, solely to bamboozle the less-technically capable. 2.3MHZ, the box screams. Um, this thing runs on infrared light, not radio. Maybe there’s something inside the box that uses a 2.3MHz signal, but that’s got nothing to do with its operation. Complete marketing techno-babble.

Bottom line, a complete rip-off!

Pretty easy to set up. I use a home theater so can’t comment on the sound.

TigerDirect made buying this TV a miserable experience. Did not deliver on time. Would not help locate or resolve delivery problem. Be careful when you buy from a seller other than Amazon. I would never buy anything from TigerDirect.

“very nice lcd” 2010-02-11
By S. Scheib (kyle , tx usa)
Bought this LCD couple weeks ago, ordered on a saturday had it by the following friday. Great picture quality, pretty good sound. I spent countless hours researching LCD’s, went to several local retailers, and finally decided on this Toshiba. I have a Toshiba CRT and reallly liked it, so figured this one would be better and boy is it. I highly recommend this model for everyone. Price wise beats Samsung and Sony out of the park. The finish on this set is real sleek looking really draws you in. Not sure when I’m gonna leave my house now. Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U buy it you won’t regret it.

“BUY A POWER FILTER!!!” 2010-01-31
By M. vick
First, Amazon and One Call have been great and I continue to buy from both.

FYI #1

If you buy ANY HD TV you need to get a good power filter/ surge protector!!! I didn’t and found out 3 days after plugging my 47in Toshiba 240 clearscan in that I should have. We turned it off on the 3rd night and it wouldnt turn back on. After doing some research I found that most of the service calls techs make on these tv’s are power supply replacements. The three days the tv worked it worked great though. Someone plugged a guitar amp in accross the room earlier that day and i think that it may have had something to do with it. I spoke with 2 techs in the area and both said it would be the power supply and that they are very touchy. They also said a stage one power filter/surge protector (power strip type) would be fine and that the old ones can get weak so buy a new one when you order your tv.

I didnt do a lot of warranty research when I bought the Toshiba so I’m not sure what the other brands are like but it’s worth looking at the replacement part shipping times. Toshiba ships ground 3 to 7 day delivery. It’s been almost 2 weeks and I have yet to see the tech w/ my new part.

Do your homework.

Keep your old tv (for a while).

Keep ALL boxs and packing for 2 or 3 months if you can.

AND….. BUY A NEW SURGE PROTECTOR!!!

At the moment I have a 98lb $1200 reminder that not doing my homework can still get me in trouble. lol

“BETTER THAN SETS COSTING MUCH MORE” 2010-01-27
By Jack L. Vargas (Mt Shasta Ca)
I did a lot of research before making this purchase, looking at other Toshiba models as well as other brands and spec wise, this set had all the others beat hands down! This purchase has been a great experience from the purchase price to the free delivery and most importantly the performance of the set. The sound on this set was much better than expected and I should have rated that a five as well, because you can’t expect theater sound from such small speakers. Everyone knows that you need to use a surround sound amp to experience theater like sound and still people harp on the sound of these sets (duh). I consider myself very particular when making such purchases and always try to strike a balance between cost vs quality. I believe this set is by far the best of the entry level 120hz/240 clear scan set out there and competes admirably with the full blown 240hz as well as led back lit sets. There have been some interesting somewhat negative reviews on this set, but honestly unless these folks received a lemon, I think they are simply suffering from buyers remorse and most likely would complain if hung with a new rope. Oh and lets not forget the reported lack of deep blacks on this set and other lower priced sets… well I can’t speak for the others, but the blacks are just fine on this set so go ahead and spend $1,000 to $1,500 dollars more and see if you can tell the difference. And finally lest we forget the off angle viewing which is said to be poor unless you spend an additional $1,000 dollars… well I have gone from side to side until all I see is the back of the set and there is no loss in quality as long as you can see the screen. And last but not least glare on the shiny screen that Toshiba chose to use on this set. My viewing room has windows on three sides and yes there is some reflection on the screen from the windows at times and guess what?… I draw the drapes when watching a program that is in high definition so I get all the detail and the glossy screen adds contrast, but when watching the news who cares? I hope this helps sort through some of the reviews as some seem to rate the product a five just because it arrived and still others give poor ratings because they are in a bad mood I guess.

First of all I love buying from Amazon. They are so easy to deal with and give great service. This Samsung Plasma is exactly what we wanted. The picture is amazing, easy to set up, and the size is perfect for our rec room. I was a little hesitant from some of the reviews, but have had no trouble at all. I would highly recomend this TV!

I actually went to BB to get the Panasonic TC-P50X1 but they were out of stock. They gave me this one for the same price. Ive had it for about 10 days.

PICTURE.
Good color, nice black levels. I have Cox cable and I set the box to 720p over HDMI.

SOUND
Surprising. I had a bottom of the line Samsung LCD in the past and that was my biggest complaint. The sound was horrible. This unit has pretty good sound and several different sound modes.

BURN IN/IMAGE RETENTION
Yesterday I had the TV on ESPN for about 4 hours while NASCAR was on. When I ran the scroll menu option I noticed the faintest retention of the ESPN logo in the lower right corner. I ran the scroll option like the manual said and its gone now. I hope this becomes less of an issue as the TV gets more hours on it.

REFLECTIVE/GLARE
Samsung claims this has some sort of anti glare protection but any light sources shows up perfectly. I have it facing my bed and I had to tilt the screen to the side so that my lamps wouldn’t show up on the screen. If you have any strong light sources in the room that you cant shut off (like a window) I wouldn’t get it.

From what I hear glare and burn in/retention are not as prominent on the Panasonic. So if BB gets that in before my 30 days are up I will probably take this one back. That said I still think this is a good TV for the price if you don’t mind the glare and are careful about what you watch for the first 200 or so hours.

By K. Fagan
I had to write a review to tell everyone about this TV ..First off I bought this TV to replace the old Projection TV and a Tube TV and being new to the digitial TV’s I have to say I was put off at first .

I could tell the picture was clearer than my Sony Projection TV and looked more vibrant and at the same time it had a slight double edge just slightly enough to annoy me so I took it back to the store.

I replaced it with the same model of Samsung I had before and got it home it looked exactly the same. I have dish network and I called them they said the new TV’s need HD to look perfect and I had them come out and put HD on the tv all I can say is WOW . What a difference I have never seen a clearer picture on any TV in my life every detail is amazing and flawless and I have friends with LCD 1080i in HD and this TV outshines them in colors and clarity.

The noise reduction should never be turned on and there is the sharpness you want to keep around 36 and for brightness I keep it around 50 it is too bright above that setting. If the people are plastic looking in the face you have it set up wrong in the NR or Saturation. I am way picky about my TV picture and thought I was going to have to pay 3 times as much to get this kind of quality it’s like looking out a crystal clear window .If you never hook up HD you will never know what your missing IF you do hoo up HD you won’t go without it ever again. I also see it shows 1980 X 1080i when on HD I thought they rated it at 720P I am not complaining..

One more thing the TV does not get hot or have any artifacts or screen burn in problems . The 42 Plasma I bought gets hot in back it is a Zenith and it worries me a bit since I just bought it.

I also wantd to tell you all the new TV’s are made for digital and HD if you are picky about the picture you will end up installing HD if the TV is 50 or over.

Great picture. great quality. I purchased this TV from Amazon 07/07/09 and have been enjoying it ever since. To be honest I was looking at the 1080p plasma’s and I’m glad I went with this one. My neighbor just bought the same one after Christmas and loves it. Highly recommend for the price.

"WoW! best deal I found" 2010-01-12
By E. Coli (Tulsa, OK)
I found this TV new at B&HPhoto.com for $699; Price includes S&H & no tax! My first concern prior to buying was the TV being 720p… My local Best Buy had it on display next to several 1080Ps and to my surprise this TV looked better or the same as the ones priced b/w 1500 to 2000 range. Still I had some doubt, but the price was unreal, so I bought it from B & H Photo.

Now that I’ve used it for a while I am delighted to say that picture is excellent! I’ve watched a few cartoon movies in blue Ray with my kids and the movies have a 3-D look to them. Terminator Salvation, the newest Harry Potter release in Blue Ray are amazing. You see things that you had not seen before.

Pros:
Picture Quality —- Do not concern yourself with 1080P if you buy this TV. Even though it is a 720P, I promise you will not notice a difference
Over the airway HD Picture —- I use an antenna to get over the air Local HD programming and picture is superior,
Standard TV signal —- The picture image from standard (non-HD) is ok, but most programs I watch are in HD so this is of no concern for me
Screen size 50" for the price
Refresh rate, contrast, blacks, also this TV has a 3D engine built in for playing games in 3D — I’ll never use this but it is a plus
Reflection is not bad and TV has features built in to help reduce this
Has a good selection of inputs/outputs

Cons:
As with most LCDs/Plasmas— "Speaker quality/sound"— it is Ok, but you’ll want to upgrade…..I bought an all in one home theater system and for me it does the job and is way better than the speakers that come with the TV, however if you are not a big movie watcher than I would not worry about upgrading.
"Remote" —- This remote is a little tooooooo busy and might be an issue for some.
"on/off music" — annoying, every time you turn the TV on or off a short tone plays.. You might be able to turn this off, but i’m not sure….petty I know.

This is a great little TV for the kitchen. I replaced our old one because my spouse, who only watched TV in the kitchen, kept bugging me for a high def TV. She thought she wanted a great big one, so I had to remind her that she does not WATCH TV (except in the kitchen). So I got what I wanted (no unjustified cost) and she got what she wanted ( a high-def TV)! It arrived fine and quickly. Price was right.
